What Makes Santa an Effective Leader?
With Christmas just around the corner, we thought, what better time to look at one of the best leaders we know, Santa Claus! It might not be the first thing you think of when you think of the Big Man himself but look a little closer and you will see that Santa makes a very effective leader.
VISION AND STRATEGY
Santa has a vision, strategy and buy-in from his employees and customers. His strategy is centred on Christmas Day, providing a focus for his vision to become a consistent reality.
VISIBILE AND APPROACHABLE TO HIS TEAM AND CUSTOMERS
Santa has a positive attitude to his staff and customers alike. He likes to appear in public, meeting his customers of all ages and demographics and taking the time to listen to what they want. By having an approachable demeanor, it is more likely that this will also be embedded into the culture of his organisation. If people feel listened to they are more likely to want to do a good job for you. And if your customers feel listened to, they will be more likely to do business with you.
MANAGING EXPECTATIONS
Santa has always been very clear about what he offers and is clear about the expectations around this offering; customers know that they must be good all year to receive a gift on Christmas Day, as long as they are asleep. Alternatively, if they are naughty throughout the year, his customers know that they should expect to receive a lump of coal instead. Santa’s service message is clear and simple to understand, and he is consistent with his delivery.
CREATING A POSITIVE CULTURE AND LOYAL WORKFORCE
Santa’s North Pole Enterprise is revered as the place to work for reindeer and elves worldwide. It is evident that he has created a positive culture within his organisation as his staff retention rate is excellent; take a look at how long his reindeer have worked for him! Rudolph must obviously love his role! Looking after your team is the best way forward, and in return your staff will show loyalty to you.
TEAMWORK AND ACCOUNTABILITY
Santa knows that the only way he can achieve his objectives is by working with a great team. Teamwork is such an important aspect of his organisation, and he makes sure that his workforce knows that he counts himself as part of the team himself. Of course, they know he is the boss, but he maintains this positive culture with a great attitude, encouraging teamwork and accountability. This way, he can be assured that they will all achieve their objectives and enjoy the process at the same time.
GOOD WORK ETHIC
Santa is known for working hard the whole year round to ensure that his organisation delivers on its promise. Santa is highly driven to succeed and will do what it takes in order to achieve his objective. No one can blame him for having the odd refreshment break for a glass of milk and maybe a mince pie on Christmas Eve!
STAY GROUNDED
Despite his fame, Santa has remained grounded throughout his success. He recognises that although he is the face of the organisation, it wouldn’t work if it were not for his amazing team behind him. Recognising group success is another way of ensuring his team feels appreciated for what they do.
